Yes, a good science fiction, space travel novel for readers who need a protagonist their own age but who enjoyed the movie The Martian. Tristan is a hero that all the world seems to find fascinating: At 16, he is one of a few teenagers whose parents are tapped to be part of the 40-person mission to colonize Mars, undertaken by a global nonprofit with cooperation from NASA & SpaceX. The endeavor is funded by people's donations, like some enormous Kick Starter, and in large part by deals with various entertainment outlets to make it a bizarre reality TV show.
Tristan & Izzy is just one such program that excites the hunger for incipient space travelers' lives. It's story of small town boy whose known he was headed to Mars since he was twelve but still fell in love with Miss Teen All American Izzy. People are fascinated with their soon-to-be-tragic end, and it's worth it to both financially to play along. Izzy will be set for life, and Tristan's best friend Herc will administer a charity doling out his share of the funds after he blasts off. The voyage is not without critics, especially the neo-Luddites who protest and even harass and terrorize the company and the training space colonists, but after a LONG exposition and lead in, the group does hit the black in two ships, one engineered by Tristan's amazing "pushtool," mechanical genius mom. She is a triple checker, and she has raised Tristan to be a prodigy himself, often taking apart his computer, phone, game console and leaving him instructions to put it back together. Tristan and his mom will need all their savvy to keep the ships and the colonists safe on a journey with more dangers than they could ever anticipate. An easy read of space adventure with a likable and relate-able man character. Good one. (less)
